Open The Oceans is working with OceanGate Inc. to plan an expedition off of Big Sur, California to the USS Macon.
In advance of the submersible expedition, we were invited by NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries Archaeology team to participate in a mapping expedition in partnership with Ocean Exploration Trust (OET). On August 18th, 2015 the OET’s Nautilus submersible conducted a high definition photo survey and bathymetric survey of the dirigible aircraft carrier USS Macon using the ROV Hercules. In addition to the mapping effort, OceanGate Foundation supported the conservation of a recovered item from the site.
